Main Types of Liposuction
Tumescent Liposuction: This is the gold standard and most common method. Surgeons inject a large volume of medicated saltwater solution (containing lidocaine for pain and epinephrine to shrink blood vessels) into the fat before removal. This minimizes blood loss, swelling, and bruising.
Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL / VASER): This technique uses ultrasonic sound waves via a specialized metal rod or grooved cannula to liquefy fat cells before suctioning them out. It allows for precise body sculpting and works well on fibrous or dense fat areas.
Laser-Assisted Liposuction (LAL / Smartlipo): This method uses laser energy delivered through a tiny fiber-optic wire to melt and break down fat. The heat from the laser also stimulates collagen production, which can help tighten the skin in the treated area.
Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL): This approach uses a specialized mechanical cannula that rapidly vibrates or moves back and forth. This automated motion allows the surgeon to remove stubborn or large volumes of fat faster and with less physical effort.
Water-Assisted Liposuction (WAL / Body-Jet): This technique uses a gentle, pulsating spray of saline solution to dislodge fat cells from surrounding tissues. It causes less trauma to nearby blood vessels and nerves and is often used when harvested fat is needed for fat grafting.
Suction-Assisted Liposuction (SAL): This is the traditional, classic method where a standard surgical vacuum and manual cannula are used to extract fat without extra energy assistance. It is less common today as newer technologies offer gentler or more precise removal.
